Cognitive Distortions and Their Relationship to Idealistic Perfectionism among Students of the College of Basic Education
Main Article Content
Abstract
The current research aims to identify the level of cognitive distortions and the level of ideal perfectionism among students of the College of Basic Education, and then find the relationship between cognitive distortions and ideal perfectionism among students of the College of Basic Education. The research community was selected from students of the College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul. A random sample was chosen from the scientific and humanities departments of the college, consisting of (300) male and female students. A ready-made tool was used to measure cognitive distortions by (Salah al-Din, 2015), consisting of 34 paragraphs with five alternatives, and a tool to measure ideal perfectionism by (Al-Ubaidi, 2020), consisting of 41 paragraphs, with five alternatives for each paragraph. After conducting validity for the two scales using the apparent validity method and extracting reliability using the retest method, the reliability of the cognitive distortions tool reached (0.83) and ideal perfectionism appeared (0.79), which is a good result. The two tools were ready for application. The researcher administered the scales to the sample and concluded the following results: there were no statistically significant differences in favor of the sample, meaning that the sample members did not have cognitive distortions, and the research sample enjoyed a good level of ideal perfectionism. There was a positive inverse relationship between the sample members' scores on the two tools, meaning that the fewer cognitive distortions, the higher the ideal perfectionism among the students. The researcher also came up with a set of recommendations and suggestions, including studying the challenges and circumstances that students face at various stages of their lives and the ability to prevent them from affecting them. He also emphasized that educational specialists at the university should pay attention to ideal perfectionism at all stages in general, and conduct a study aimed at identifying the relationship between cognitive distortions and other important variables such as self-esteem, job satisfaction, existential intelligence, psychological well-being, productivity, quality of life, sense of belonging, organizational thinking, self-confidence, and personality traits.
