Abstract

This research explores the manifestation of argumentative authority in the poetry of Ḥassān ibn Thābit from a pragmatic perspective. The study argues that his poetic discourse was not merely an aesthetic or emotional expression but rather a functional tool of persuasion, designed to establish legitimacy and exert influence. It examines the ways in which the poet employed persuasive strategies and rhetorical mechanisms to construct the validity of his speech across religious, political, and ethical contexts, thereby transforming poetry into a performative discourse with tangible impact. The research is organized around three central dimensions that reflect different forms of authority: religious authority grounded in prophecy and revelation, political authority linked to the leadership of the prophetic state and the consolidation of the Prophet’s status, and moral authority expressed in the glorification of virtues and the rejection of vices. Employing tools of pragmatic analysis—particularly the concepts of argumentation, the argumentative hierarchy, and new rhetoric—the study reveals the functional depth of Ḥassān’s poetry in shaping legitimacy, reinforcing ideological frameworks, and influencing audiences within the prophetic and missionary context.
