Abstract

Sustainable development is a comprehensive framework that aims to achieve a delicate balance between economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Educational institutions have begun to occupy a pivotal position in achieving this goal, given their role in instilling environmental awareness and promoting sustainable community practices. In the Libyan context, this issue is gaining increasing importance in light of the worsening environmental and economic challenges, especially in major cities such as Benghazi, which is witnessing profound urban and societal transformation.

This study seeks to analyze the reality of the educational environment in the city of Benghazi from a field-based geographical perspective, by assessing the extent to which sustainability principles are integrated into the infrastructure of educational institutions, the content of curricula, and the behavior of educational actors. The study also identifies the most prominent challenges and gaps that hinder the achievement of true sustainability in the education sector, whether in terms of the unbalanced spatial distribution of institutions, weak environmental planning, or limited awareness of sustainability concepts.

Through fieldwork, data collection, and analysis, the study proposes a practical, applicable framework that can enhance the role of educational institutions as effective drivers of sustainable development, not only in Benghazi but across Libya as a whole.
