Abstract

Th aim of the research is to highlight the cultural dimension in the educational dictionary for non-native Arabic speakers, in Hans Wehr, and the extent to which the selected lexicon entries are related to the current state of Arabic. This dictionary gained wide fame in European countries in the field of teaching Arabic to non-native speakers. The content analysis method was applied to the entry of the letter "HAMZA", after defining the categories of analysis according to the cultural dimension. The research concluded that many vocabulary items extended beyond their lexical meanings commonly recognized within Arabic society. Most of these words were linked to social, religious, historical, and cultural aspects, including customs and traditions. The dictionary fell short in presenting the cultural dimensions of the vocabulary.  In addition, it revealed the presence of loanwords from other languages such as French, English, Turkish and Persian. The vocabulary also showed a clear connection to the Egyptian environment. Many of the new linguistic terms were either not addressed or their Arabic equivalents were not widely used. Therefore, the dictionary presented them in their foreign non-Arabic from. The research recommended the importance of paying greater attention to the cultural aspect presented to foreign learners. Encouraging the use of dictionaries because of their importance in acquiring vocabulary and enhancing language proficiency. It also emphasized the need to update the Hans Wehr Dictionary, as new vocabularies have emerged alongside the developments in Arab society. Furthermore, it called for collaboration between Arab and European institutions to create a modern bilingual Arabic-English dictionary specifically designed for foreign learners.
