Abstract

At the core of the ancient world lies a region of ancient civilizations of great wealth between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, historically known as the Euphrates Island, and geographically located now among three countries: Iraq, Syria and Turkey. This region has enjoyed a rich history of major events, and different civilizations and cultures arose on its land. The most prominent residents were from the Arab tribes: Bakr, Mudar and Rabi’a. It was also inhabited and resided by a large number of celebrity scholars throughout history, and they were mentioned in many books and historical references, including the venerable reference of the historian Yaqut al-Hamawi, who met with a number of scholars and celebrity scholars of this region and learned from them, or read about them. This research provides an overview of the book " Mu'jam al-Udabā "Literary Encyclopedia, Expert Guide to Literature", and its author: "Yaqut al-Hamawi", who is famous for this great encyclopedia. The research, additionally, and in brief, defines the Euphrates Island region and its most important cities. The research also aims to indicate some of the celebrity scholars of the Euphrates island who were mentioned in “Mu'jam al-Udabā (Literary Encyclopedia)”.
