The Development of Objectivity Maps in Human Geography through the Ages: A Study in Geographical Thought
Main Article Content
Abstract
Thematic maps are an essential tool in human geography, expressing geographic data in ways that highlight social, economic, political, and cultural phenomena. Thematic maps have witnessed great development throughout the ages, from ancient times to the modern digital age, reflecting the development in human knowledge and available technologies. Maps in ancient times focused on the basic aspects of navigation and geographical positioning. The first maps appeared in the Sumerian, Egyptian, and Greek civilizations, and were based on primitive symbols to express human phenomena such as population distribution or commercial centers. In Europe and the Middle East, maps developed to include cultural and religious aspects, as they were used to represent imperial extensions and pilgrimage routes. Islamic geography, such as Al-Idrisi’s maps, contributed to laying advanced foundations for thematic maps. Thematic maps then witnessed a qualitative leap with the use of precise geographic projections and drawing techniques developed to become more accurate and detailed, allowing demographic and economic phenomena to be represented more clearly. With the Industrial Revolution, the need for maps that reflected economic activities, transportation networks, and urban centers increased. New cartographic schools emerged, and maps relied on accurate statistical data. Technological progress led to the development of geographic information systems (GIS), which allowed the production of interactive and dynamic maps. Nowadays, thematic maps are used in analyzing big data to monitor social, economic and environmental changes with great accuracy. The development of thematic maps reflects the progress of geographical thought and the increasing human ability to understand and represent human phenomena. Innovation in mapping systems and technologies continues, enhancing its role as an analytical and strategic tool in the study of human geography.
