Abstract
Ibn Asakir al-Dimashqi’s (d. 571 AH/1176AD) History of the City of Damascus is one of the largest historical sources that deal with the news of cities, as it was not written for the scholars of one region and those who entered it from other countries only, but rather included everyone who held a position in it, and everyone who communicated with its sheikhs.
The intellectual and scientific life that accompanied the era of the Umayyad state is one of the many aspects that Ibn Asakir explaines in his book. Also, he deals with various sciences, including the transmitted sciences such as interpretation, jurisprudence, language, hadith, and others. Additionally, the book includes the role of the caliphs of the Umayyad state, Muslim scholars, and governors in various countries in developing scientific life through the assistance of foreign elements alongside Arab Muslim scholars, which led to the flourishing of scientific aspect in the Umayyad era.
