Modern Changes of Turkish Women and the Beginning of Their Rise (1923-1929)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Western civilizations have given women special attention, especially with regard to women’s equality with men. They have come up with values in terms of women’s relationship with men that are radically different from that relationship in past eras, in which women were viewed as subordinate to men, and that God created them to serve the household. Turkey was one of those countries that worked to develop women and make them partners with men, regardless of their status. Thus, no development can occur in any country without women’s participation at all levels, and thus they can liberate themselves from exploitation and oppression. As a result, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk did not neglect the importance of women and their role in Turkish society, especially since they work to raise and prepare a generation that will work to strengthen Turkey. Therefore, we find him encouraging the importance of women obtaining their political and social rights through their participation with men in all of their work and granting them many privileges, which subsequently led to the emergence of the role of women in the Turkish Republic and their education in order to educate them and take their appropriate place in society, in addition to their participation in parliamentary elections and municipal councils. All of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s speeches included women’s rights clearly and explicitly.
