Military Impact of the Moroccans in the Spanish Civil War during 1936-1939
Main Article Content
Abstract
The motivations behind Franco's coup against the Second Spanish Republic can be traced to the overarching policies implemented by the Republic's administration, both domestically and within the Spanish protectorate in Morocco. The military assumed control over the northern Moroccan protection following the declaration of a state of emergency, resulting in the arrest of individuals who were either supportive of or collaborated with the Spanish Republic. The Spanish Civil War commenced in 1936 from Moroccan territory, as General Franco strengthened his authority in northern Morocco, transforming the region into a strategic base for his coup and the ensuing conflict against the Republicans. He sought assistance from the local Moroccan population, enlisting them into his forces to bolster his campaign against the Republicans, who were formidable adversaries in their own right.
