Abstract

The  Arabic dialects keep proving themselves at all times and places but they have been influenced internally, by another dialect or standard Arabic, and externally, by other languages that came into contact with them. This caused change in these dialects and even created new dialects, including the contemporary Iraqi dialect.

It well known that contemporary Iraqi dialect is an extension of the standard Arabic and its accompanying dialects. Many of the features shown by this dialect existed at an early time and have been present in the same manner through times. Such features are known as linguistic substrate.

This paper discusses linguistic substrate kept by contemporary Iraqi dialect, focusing on three linguistic levels: phonological, morphological, and syntactic. The semantic level, however, was overlooked because it does not fall under linguistic substrate, as one of the conditions that a word or structure should meet in order to be deemed a linguistic substrate is that it should match in meaning its linguistic origin.
