Abstract

Character and dialogue are two of the main elements in a literary text. The character represents the person the text and the dialogue shows the type of relationship between the characters, as well as between the character and himself around whom the events revolve. Dialogue is of two types: external dialogue and internal dialogue. There is no dialogue without characters, and there are no characters without dialogue. It is an essential part of the structure of the literary text. It can reveal the hero’s psychology and understand his actions, his way of life, and how to deal with him. Therefore, characterization is a vital element in building a fictional work of art. Dialogue has an important role in this construction, as it serves as the backbone that connects the parts of the work to each other. It is a structural and semantic element in the novel. It represents an essential factor on which events are based. There will be no drama, and there will be no event unless one fictional character meets another. Dialogue precedes its existence than characters, and it is natural that any event cannot be imagined to occur except within a specific dialogue framework. Therefore, the novelist always needs to frame both types of dialogues.
