The Negroes in Mauritania A Study of their Socio-political Conditions in 1960-1984
Main Article Content
Abstract
The issue of the Negroes in Mauritania is one of the important topics that deserves investigation. This is related to the historical fact that Negroes represent the original and thus the oldest inhabitants of Mauritania. Furthermore, Mauritania represents the link between the Arab world and the African one. As far as Mauritanian Negroes have links with neighboring African countries, especially Senegal, most of the Negro tribes trace their origins back to African countries. As such, some of them have influenced neighboring countries, especially Senegal. Therefore, some extremist Negroes in Mauritania called for joining Senegal and confirming the African identity in Mauritania. They, further, called for its separation from Arab affiliation. These extremist, however, did not achieve their goal due to the presence of some moderate Mauritanian negroes who emphasized their belonging to Mauritania and stressed that the bond of Islam is stronger than their African affiliation. They rejected all calls to join the African ocean, and thus proved that the Negroes in Mauritania are not a minority in Mauritanian society, but rather an important group in Mauritanian society. As such, they participated in political events in Mauritania, and they became a major actor in the course of its political events.
