Abstract

The issue of piracy had a significant impact on the diplomatic interactions between the Eastern and Western regions, with a particular emphasis on the Mamluk Empire and the Western world. The aforementioned event had a significant impact on the Crusaders and Mamluks, influencing their respective strengths and weaknesses, as well as exerting an effect on their economic, political, and military domains. The act of piracy posed a significant threat to both maritime and land-based trade routes, thereby impacting the well-being and vested interests of individuals. European governments provided financial and military support to piracy in order to undermine Mamluk trade. The Mamluk state responded to piracy by undertaking military expeditions to secure their trade in Egypt and the Levant, as well as purging Crusader and pirate strongholds.
