Abstract

The phenomenon of sleep has been considered one of the great proof and secrets of Almighty Allah in His creation, showing His power and the greatness of His working in them. It is a great blessing from the Almighty to them, for it is one of the necessities of their lives and an inherent feature of it.

Because of this great proof given by Allah to His worshippers, the aim of this study is to shed light on this wonderful phenomenon by focusing on the rhetorical context of the verses in which the word sleep and its meanings, types and phases are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an. It also aims to show the accuracy of the Qur'anic texts use of this word in order to deduce its intended meaning in the light of the textual relationships and structures that link the individual words of the Qur'an with the formative sentences of its texts and the context.

The meanings and types of sleep have been characterized by different words depending on the stages at which it occurs. For example, nap refers to the beginning of sleep, while the word drowsiness refers to its onset. Also, slumber refers to intermittent sleep, while rest refers to long sleep, and nap refers to sleep in the middle of the day. Finally, the phrase “sleep is death” is used for souls whose time is not come yet to leave life.

The study focused on an introduction to the definition of context, linguistic and idiomatic, and the importance of the Qur'anic context. It explained the definition of the phenomenon of sleep, both linguistically and idiomatically, and its meanings, types and stages within the verses in which it is mentioned. The requirements of this study were subjective, and the titles were inspired by the verses themselves: "sleep, hibernation, drowsiness, remission, slumber, siesta and death" in the Qur'an.

The study traced the theme of sleep and its meanings in Quranic contexts. It focused on the rhetorical use of vocabulary, phrases and full texts in the context of general discourse. It highlighted the main findings that the research arrived at.
