The Impact of Foreign Interference in the secession of South Sudan 1985-2005: The United States of America as a Model
Main Article Content
Abstract
The United States of America sought to control Sudan’s economic capabilities, especially after American oil companies entered Sudan and discovered the presence of oil and gas in southern Sudan in abundant quantities. Its interference in Sudanese affairs increased after Nimeiri turned towards the Western camp and his contribution to the transfer of Falasha Jews from Ethiopia to the Zionist entity. This precipitated the fall of his regime in 1985, and during the era of the Salvation Government, the United States of America supported the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement led by John Garang, in addition to striking Al-Shifa drug factory on the pretext that it contained materials that help in the production of weapons of mass destruction as well as its political pressure on the Salvation Government through Its approval of the Sudan Peace Law and its prompting the Sudanese government to enter into negotiations with John Garang in Machakos in 2002 and Naivasha in 2005, which led to the separation of southern Sudan from Sudan and the establishment of the state of southern Sudan.
